Ok, here's the plan:
I want to get everyone decided on a topic and moving onto the research phase ASAP. If you need to change the question/topic later, that is totally O.K. However, until you get seriously moving in one direction, you won't know if it's the right or wrong choice for you.
So,
Goals for week one: 1. Decide upon one or more topics and/or questions. 2. Complete a first draft of your research proposal, for use in your FOLIO to demonstrate PLANNING OF RESEARCH PROCESSES (among other things).
DUE: Monday of week 2 (actually week 10 of term.. you know what I mean). If this deadline can not be met, you need to explain why and what are you going to do about it.
"WHYYYY, Mr T, do we need to get a draft proposal done so EAAAARLYYYY??" , I hear you ask..
The simple answer is that you guys have holidays coming up, where you can make some super excellent progress on your research.. getting heaps and heaps of background information, getting a broad perspective, making sure you have a really good idea of what your KEY FINDINGS might end up looking like. To do this, you need a clear plan of what your research methods are going to be.
I can't stress this point enough: IT ESSENTIAL, IF YOU WANT TO SUCCEED IN THIS SUBJECT, SO GET OFF TO A FAST START.
Take advantage of this holiday period coming up. For this subject at least, you are Year 12's.. it's a big step up from Year 11. /endrant
Here's a list of FOLIO ESSENTIALS, with heaps of excellent resources to help you develop your proposal and get on with the research.
1) Finalise proposals after presenting them to the class. 2) Outline to me, in your journal, what you wish to achieve in the holidays. Write it as if it was a letter to me. This will allow me to write back to you.. a great way to show "responding to feedback" in your Folio!! 3) Complete your first summary of web resources.
Mr T's comments. Ok guys.. we didn't have much luck with getting our first task done.. and after my inspiring speech!!
Like I said in class.. you need to trust me with these deadlines.. I've seen how students let this subject slip and you need to keep the pace up.. I want this to be as smooth and enjoyable as possible.. I mean YOU get to pick the topic! Keep up guys.. it's a year 12 subject.
SUMMARY OF WEB RESOURCES. Instructions: I want you to conduct a preliminary summary of web resources available about your general topic. You don't need to look at them in too much depth.. just a skim read. You then need to categorise your sources into your own categories, based on your question. Your categories could be based on your topic questions, or elements of your focus question, or the different elements that make up your topic.. or anything! You need to have 15-20 websites in this preliminary summary.
There are two reasons I want you to do this 1) It forces you to stretch yourself in your web searching skills (which I'm sure are mad skillz) 2) It demonstrates "exploration of your research topic" and will help you understand if your topic or question are going to be easy or hard to search for.
Here's an extended list of Performance Standards that you will need to demonstrate in the Folio:
P1 Consideration and identification of a research topic
Exploration of the research topic within an area of interest
Refinement of a particular research topic.
P2 Planning of research processes appropriate to the research topic
Identification, selection, and design of research processes appropriate to the research topic
Due attention to ethical and manageable research processes
ApplicationA1 Development of the research
Location, collection, and recording of information
Interaction with others and response to feedback
Application of relevant research processes and reference to the chosen capability.
A2 Analysis of information and exploration of ideas
Organisation and analysis of relevant information and ideas
Appropriate response to challenges when undertaking the research.
A3 Application of knowledge and skills
Development and use of topic-specific knowledge and skills
